Day 1: Arrival – Kumai – Tanjung Harapan
Warm greetings and welcome to Kalimantan! Upon your arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport, our courteous guide will be pleased to welcome you and escort you by taxi through charming local villages on a scenic 30-minute drive to Kumai. At the Kumaipier, you are invited to board our traditional wooden river boat, where our friendly crew will greet you with warm smiles, ready to accompany you on this unforgettable journey. As the boat gently glides along the Kumai River toward Tanjung Puting National Park, please enjoy the beautiful views of lush mangrove forests, towering palm trees, and wildlife along the Sekonyer River.
Kindly enjoy a delicious, freshly prepared lunch on board while savoring the tranquil river views. At 14:00, you may take a leisurely walk to the orangutan feeding platform. Experience the enchantment as these remarkable creatures approach, swing from tree to tree, or come toward the platform during the feeding session from 15:00 to 17:00 – a truly magical moment. As the sun sets, please observe the unique proboscis monkeys, endemic to Kalimantan, as they rest comfortably in their natural habitat, alongside other playful primates on the riverbank trees. Your boat is thoughtfully equipped with comfortable mattresses, pillows, mosquito nets, and basic facilities to offer a perfect blend of adventure and comfort.
About Tanjung Puting National Park
Tanjung Puting National Park was officially established in 1982 with the support of conservationist Biruté Galdikas. It was subsequently expanded to cover an area of 415,040 hectares, as per the Ministry of Forestry Decree No. 687/KPTS-II/1996 dated October 25, 1996. Previously, this area was designated as the Sampit Wildlife Sanctuary by the Dutch East Indies government in 1937 and later became the Tanjung Puting Wildlife Sanctuary in the 1970s. It was also recognized in Indonesia’s Biosphere Reserve list in 1977.
Day 2: Pondok Tanggui Camp – Camp Leakey
After a refreshing breakfast, the boat will transport you deeper into the rainforest towards Pondok Tanggui Camp, cruising the calm river early in the morning. Along the way, please enjoy breathtaking views and keep an eye out for various wildlife species.
Pondok Tanggui Camp
Pondok Tanggui Camp is a haven for photography enthusiasts. The morning light provides ideal conditions for clear photos and videos, and the camp is conveniently close to the orangutan feeding area, making it easier to capture memorable shots.
Upon arrival at the camp pier, you are invited to walk across awooden bridge to the orangutan feeding station from 09:00 to 11:00. Kindly observe the orangutans’ natural interactions and feeding behavior. The return walk to the boat through the enchanting forest trail offers opportunities to see wild plants such as pitcher plants (Nepenthes) and other fascinating flora. Afterward, please return to the boat for a two-hour cruise to Camp Leakey – the heart of orangutan conservation.
About Camp Leakey
Camp Leakey was established following a research plan initiated by Biruté Mary Galdikas during her graduate studies, with the support of anthropologist Louis Leakey. The camp originally served as a research base and has evolved into a rehabilitation center for orangutans rescued from threats such as illegal pet trade and habitat destruction.
As you approach Camp Leakey , you may notice the river’s dark yet clear water—a natural characteristic caused by organic materials from the rainforest. Please enjoy wildlife viewing from the boat deck. At 14:00, attend the orangutan feeding session at Camp Leakey . Then, take a leisurely stroll across the wooden bridge to the information center to discover the inspiring history of Camp Leakey and learn about vital conservation efforts.
A gentle 30-minute walk through the rainforest will allow you to observe foraging orangutans in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, the boat will cruise downstream to a resting area near nipa palm trees, where you may observe playful proboscis monkeys once again. Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus) Behavior These monkeys are active during the day and rest at night in trees.
They live in social groups with distinct roles and communicate through various vocalizations and body language. The boat will arrive at the nipa palm area around 18:00, where we hope you enjoy the sight of remarkable fireflies gathering here. These fireflies emit natural light, creating a mesmerizing display reminiscent of a decorated Christmas tree with thousands of glowing points.
Why Fireflies Glow
Fireflies produce light through bioluminescence, a natural chemical reaction that generates cold light without heat. This light helps them attract mates, communicate, and defend against predators. Fireflies thrive near nipa palms due to the high humidity, availability of food sources, and shelter provided by the dense palm leaves.
Day 3: Kumai Town – Pangkalan Bun Airport
Begin your final morning with breakfast as you cruise back to Kumai Town. Please savor your last moments of tranquil river views before disembarking from the boat.
From Kumai, transfer by car to Pangkalan Bun Airport for your onward journey, carrying unforgettable memories of Kalimantan’s wild heart. The tour will conclude
approximately between 09:00 and 10:00.
NOTE: Should your flight depart earlier than the scheduled time, we kindly request you to inform your guide in advance. Your guide will adjust the itinerary accordingly to ensure timely arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport. Before leaving the boat, please check all your belongings to ensure nothing is left behind.
